Soon we will be out of this place :) The girls are doing so well. We are planning to come home this week as long as they both keep their weights up and don't have any significant spells. We are all so ready to be home!
As of yesterday, Lincoln weighed 6lbs 2ozs and Maya weighed 5lbs 7ozs. Lincoln got her feeding tube pulled last week and Maya lost hers a few days back too. The docs have decided that Maya will be kept on O2, but that's ok. We are just happy to get to take her home, hopefully at the same time as her sis! Mom had her shower this past Saturday. Grandma Chicky threw a beautiful party and it was so great to get to see everyone!
Aunt Karrie has painted our nursery and it looks amazing! I will be sure to post pics of it soon.
We'll keep everyone posted on our homecoming. Love to you all!

Here are some random pics from the last couple weeks:
I can not download pics to this computer, so just some new info for you all.
Lincoln is getting so big and is now 5lbs 12 oz. She had been tooting up a storm and we now call her tootie. Seriously, like that much noise should not come out of such a little person. She is really doing a great job on breastfeeding. Her weight has kind of hovered so mom had to succumb to what we now call the great bottle war of 2011. The docs just felt like she is using so much energy to breastfeed, and that bottle feeding with a high flow would get her orally feeding without all the work. Mom was super emotional and reluctant to give this up, but our fist day proved successful. She gained a whole ounce over night! Plus dad does such a good job at it :) They are really hinting that Lincoln may get to go home soon. Not quite sure how soon, but are keeping our fingers crossed.
This has brought on such mixed emotions. We will be so happy to get her home, but so sad that Maya will still have to stay. Wondering how we will be able to take care of and nurse both girls with Maya still here. Just cant wait to get them both home so we can finally be a family and take care of our own children.
Maya is doing good too. She is actually 5lbs 8oz (not 5lbs 10oz- from last post) and catching up to her sis fast! She is still trying to figure out this whole breathing thing. Lots of up and down with her oxygen. They keep trying to ween her, and then she will start to really struggle again. Preparing ourselves for her to come home on it, but really hoping she doesn't. Yesterday they felt like she was really carrying a lot more fluid and needed to have a nice stool to get her respiratory rates down. And that she did :) Our wonderful nurse was helping to get things moving down there and Maya let go all over her hand!! It was so funny! I have never seen so much poop go shooting out of a baby :) I think she feels much better now!
Sorry we have been so out of touch. I will try to post some pics soon.Savannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16371929369146859094noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4943833607635311437.post-25250640391826802412011-02-22T10:26:00.001-08:002013-11-10T11:50:38.873-08:007 Weeks!

Hello Everyone, Savannah has asked me to do a quick post for them.

This week has been a long week for the Maxwell's. Savannah is having to stay at the hospital now 24/7, and Dad stays when he can. Both girls are working on breast feeding and it is very important that Mom is there for every single feeding. They are working on coordination of sucking, swallowing and breathing. This is a big task for preemies.

I now call them my BIG girls, as they have both jumped the 5lb mark! Lincoln weighs in at 5lbs 90z. and Maya at 5lb 1oz.

Maya is also working on getting rid of her nasal cannula. She tries a little each day- baby steps. She will get there one day.

Mom and Dad celebrated their 2ND Anniversary this week sitting vigilantly with their new loves.

Each day brings new hurdles to jump, but slowly but surely they are getting there.

I am going to post a couple of pictures of the girls, we are not allowed to use flash on the camera and my camera is not as good as Savannah's, but I will do my best.

Thank you to everyone for their continued support to Adam, Savannah, Lincoln and Maya, you may never know how much each and every thing you have done has meant to them.

Lincoln came off her oxygen on Sunday and has been off all week. Maya is being weened down and has been doing really well.
Maya has been getting to try breastfeeding now too. Yesterday, mom got to feed both girls at the same time for the first time. It was tricky to keep both girls on, but with dads help we are getting a hang of it.
Today the girls graduated to big girl cribs. It is so nice to be able to see and hear them so much better. Not to mention how much easier it is to change diapers now that we don't have to reach through little port-holes.
Maya now weighs 4lbs 8oz and Lincoln weighs 5lbs!!! And both girls are 18in long now!!!!
Sorry I have not updated the blog since last week. Life is very busy now as we get to be more and more involved in the girls' care.
Maya is now 4lbs!!! She is being weened down little by little on her oxygen and seems to be doing well. This week she got to start non-nutritive practice feedings. She has only tried a couple times, but is figuring it out. She really seems to be catching up to her sister.
Lincoln is 4lbs 6oz! She is working on coming off her nasal cannula all together. Lincoln is now working on real breast feeding!! It is so exciting! Right now we get to try for a few minutes once a day before a tube feeding starts. We will work on it everyday until she gets strong enough to take in a full feeding on her own.
Mom and Dad are so amazed at how strong the girls are. We know we have a ways to go but are so hopeful and eager for a healthy homecoming!
Lincoln reached the 4lb mark this week. She lost an ounce the following day and dropped just below, but we are still so excited that she is getting bigger! She is getting to spend quality time at the breast with Mom every day and really seems to be figuring it out. By the time she is strong enough to come off her feeding tube she will be ready! She is doing really well at keeping her temp and may even get to move into an open crib sometime in the next couple weeks.
Maya is still following behind a bit. Her blood transfusion improved her hemoglobin levels, but she is still having respiration issues. She is having a hard time keeping her O2 levels up and despite daily meds her lung x-rays are looking worse. We hope she can get better soon and be able to come out more like her sis. Keep her in your thoughts.
Maya had to get another blood transfusion due to low hemoglobin. She had to get stuck several times before they finally got a good vein in her scalp. Poor thing. But she did really well, and hopefully she will start to feel better soon!
Lincoln has been doing well with her breathing so they let us introduce her to the breast today. Not to eat, but just to get familiar. They are still too young to coordinate suck, swallow, and breath. So they have her suck while she is getting her feeding through her tube. She did a great job and Mom was so happy! It was such a nice reward for all this pumping.
We are both growing and showing signs that we can breath and keep warm on our own, so we are getting a chance to do so.
Maya got her IV out and is now getting almost as much milk as her sister at each feed.
Lincoln is trying to come off her oxygen all together. Yesterday morning she was off for a few hours and then went back on when she started struggling to keep her O2 levels up. This morning we tried again, and she was doing really well. She was having some spells, but we are going to let her keep trying on her own. Mom got some good pics of Dad holding Lincoln today with no cannula on, so you can see her cute face better.
Both girls are doing a pretty god job at keeping their temps up on their own. Today they got to be dressed for the first time ever!! It is so funny because they are still swimming even in the preemie size. We can really tell they are growing. It is funny things like their ears which look more defined and their heads which feel so much larger in our hands now.
The girls are doing good. Maya is now 3lbs 2 oz!!! She came off the cpap last night and they keep increasing her feeds so she is no longer receiving TPN and lipids! She may even get to lose her IV soon! Lincoln continues to impress us. Both girls are being swaddled again so Mom got to hold Lincoln all bundled up for a long time yesterday. Today Mom and Dad both got to Kangaroo hold. Dad was trying out some of his prime material on Lincoln and we swear she was laughing :) There's much more where that came from.
Maya reached 3 lbs at her weigh in last night!! She is still on cpap to help get her CO2 levels on track. Mom got to hold her for a bit yesterday.
Lincoln now weighs in at 3 lbs 5 oz. She is on full feeds, no more IV, and hopefully weening off her nasal cannula soon. Daddy got to hold Lincoln yesterday and today was Mom's turn.
We got a really cute pack'n'play that Adam and Jake set up in our bedroom. Since the move and not having much time to unpack, it is the first thing that we have really gotten to set up. It is definitely bittersweet.
Staying positive and hoping for the day when the girls are big and healthy and get to come home :)Savannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16371929369146859094noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4943833607635311437.post-74359673132861136162011-01-15T21:32:00.000-08:002011-01-15T21:32:51.391-08:002 weeks old!!We are 2 weeks old today! Everyone thinks we look bigger.
Miss Maya has had a rough couple days. She was really laboring to breath and had to go back on cpap, but now she is doing much better. Poor little lamb just needs some extra lovein.
Lincoln is still doing great! Her umbilical cord fell off and now she has a cute little belly button. Mommy got to hold Lincoln today and it felt so good for both of us. She finished her last round of antibiotics so she got her IV out and Mommy got to wash her hair.
We all love Saturdays & Sundays. It is when we both have our favorite nurses. The girls feel so much better when they are here and Mommy and Daddy are so relieved. We are so lucky to have them taking care of all of us.
We were so glad to see Mamma Joy today. Thanks for coming to see us.
Aunt Emily & Amy, we love our pictures, drawlings, and melt beads! We put them up above our beds to decorate our area. We can't wait to meet you!
Morgan, thank you so so much for going to get the pump. I love it! It really means alot to us that you would take time out of your day to run errands for us. You are such a good friend!
A huge thanks to Uncle Jake who hooked us up with some groceries and even went to get Mommy a part to her breast pump. What a good guy! We love him so much and are already planning to use him as our human jungle gym :)
Grandma Chicky and Linda, thank you so much for coming over to clean and cook for us! You have no idea how much stress that takes off Mommy! It feels so good to come home to a clean house and not have to worry about a few meals. You are the best mommys yourselves and you have taught me so much about what it means to be a good mother.
Nikki and Leslie, that was the best dinner!! We want both recipes. And thank you for the magazines and care package. I'm not going to lie, I have almost ate all of those biscuits.. YUMMY!!
You guys are all too good to us! We are so lucky to have all of you in our lives.
Lincoln had to go back on her nasal cannula, but neither girls were having bradycardia spells or apnea as much today. The girls were all swaddled up. This is a step towards getting them to self regulate their temperatures so that they can eventually be out of the isolette. Lincoln had a pretty bow in her hair today and she looked so sweet. Lincoln is back up to her birth weight of 3lbs 2 oz, and Maya is almost there at 2lbs 12oz. Maya is still not tolerating her feeds as well as her sister so she gets only 11cc of milk every 3 hours plus TPN and lipids. Lincoln is all the way up to 25cc and is getting a human milk fortifier to bump up her cals so she will gain.
They are both so sweet and we can not believe it has almost been 2 weeks now.
We are both doing well. Mom and Dad got to do "Kangaroo Time" today which really helped us all feel a little better.
We hope Grandpa Bob is feeling better and cant wait to meet him.
A HUGE Thank You to all the NMOMers who have been sending their birth stories and kind words! You have no idea how much it helps to hear that you all have survived very similar circumstances and that your children have all grown up to be healthy and wonderful! It is also so helpful to hear how you all coped yourselves. We are doing our best to rest and eat so that we can be as strong as we can for the girls.
I am certain that we could not be doing this with out all of your support!
The girls both continue to do well. The usual preemie complications can seem so overwhelming when the doctor is telling you about something new every time they do rounds. Over all the general opinion of our physician and resident is that the girls are doing exceptionally well for their gestational age. We are grateful that they are such strong little things. We are confident that they will continue to grow and improve every day.
Thank you so much to everyone for all your support! Adam and I are truly blessed to have such a large and loving support network. Everything you all are doing for us really makes this difficult time mush easier on us and I can not even beginning to tell you how much it means to us to know that we are cared for so much. The meals and errands are favors that are being done for us are so much more than what they really are. So thank you!!!
No new pics for today, but the ones from yesterday are finally up on shutterfly if you are interested.
We also want to let our cousin Taylor know that she is in our thoughts. We are so sorry about sweet Tuckie and so sorry that you have to go through this loss. You are the best pet mom I have ever met, and just know that Tucker was so lucky to be your baby. We are thinking of you!! Wish I could give you a big big hug. Love you so much!!!
However, we found out today that we have not really been following the usual standards of the NICU. We were told that the things the nurses were letting us do or sometimes even encouraging us to do thus far, are not conducive to a healthy environment for the girls and they are being over stimulated. I guess we were all just too excited and under the impression that they were doing much better than reality. Although the girls are well and making improvements, they should still not be here for 11 weeks. We should be creating a womb like environment. This means many changes.
From now on, the girls isolettes will have to be covered at all times to shield the light. We will also not be taking as many photos, if any, so please enjoy the ones we have so far.
Most importantly, we are no longer supposed to have guests. Thank you to everyone who was lucky enough to meet us already. Everyone else will have to wait until our homecoming.
Grandmas and Grandpas, you are still welcome to visit. We just have to cut back. Also, there is no more touching by anyone other than Mom, Dad, and the NICU staff. Please adhere to these new rules if you are visiting without us, and feel free to read this protocol outline the nurse left out on her desk for more details.
This news was really difficult for us as we had been encouraged to initiate these behaviors. We are glad to have had these first few days to meet our new baby girls, and understand that these protocols are in their best interest. Mom will continue to keep you all updated, and try to take a picture as the nurse allows. Grateful for all your kind thoughts.

Here are a couple pictures from today, which was actually a really great day for both girls. Lincoln no longer needs a nasal cannula so you can see her face much better now. They are both feeding and gaining!

We were both so awake and alert today. We are both gaining weight and doing really well otherwise. Maya did have to get a blood transfusion today, which was scary, but immediately had an effect on the bradycardia episodes. Mommy and Daddy got to hold again today, and should get to every day now as long as we continue to improve. Mommy is pumping right along too... literally.
Our visitors today: Chicky, Grandpa Dean and Papi, and Morgan.
We are all really going to miss our nurses that we've had the past few days! Without them we would not be doing so well.
Mommy and Daddy have been researching prematurity and life in the NICU. This is not something we had ever imagined we would have to plan for. Even though we had been reading baby books throughout my whole pregnancy, we feel behind. Click on the links here if you are interested in info about premature birth or about the NICU. The March of Dimes is a wonderful resource with info on premature birth as well as volunteer and donation opportunities.
Thank you so much Tones and Anthony for helping get fruniture into the house! You have no idea how much stress it takes off me to get the house in order. You guys ar the best!
Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers!Savannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16371929369146859094noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4943833607635311437.post-3677084961730014752011-01-09T08:22:00.000-08:002011-01-09T08:22:08.450-08:001/8/11 - One Week OldWe are 1 week old today and it was another one full of improvements.
Both girls had low enough billirubin that they are off their lights for now - which means no more sun glasses. Maya didn't have any residuals, so she is now feeding every 3 hours just like her sister. Daddy got to change Mayas diaper twice today. Both girls are also gaining weight now and Maya is catching up. Currently Lincoln weighs 2 lbs 10 ozs and Maya is 2lbs 8 ozs. And the best news of all... we both got to do "Kangaroo Time" today! It was wonderful! Daddy got to hold Lincoln while Mommy held Maya.
We had lots of visitors again today: Papi and Grandpa Dean, Aunt Saundra and Aunt Judy Maxwell, Aunt Andrea and Taylor with Grandma Chicky, Mama Joy, Aunt Karrie, and Aunt Judy Trimmell, and Tony.
Thank you Mim and Gaga, Mim and Grandpa John, Uncle Johnny, and Aunt Amy for coming to visit mom and dad last night. Going home is the hardest thing we have ever done and it doesn't get any easier (at least not yet). The evenings have been very emotional for us, so it was so nice to have you all there.
Maya has been having little episodes of bradycardia. Her nurse suspects that she may have low blood volume. They are keeping an eye on her for now. If she is low, she will end up getting a transfusion. That being said, I am a member of the Northland Mothers of Multiples group. We are having a small blood drive on Thursday 1/13 from 4:00 - 7:00pm. There will be a mobile donation clinic in the parking lot at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church (9555 North Oak Trfy). Mommy got to change Maya's daiper today and take her temp. Lincoln has been getting lots of milk and took a nice big dump :) It was so much she blasted out of her diaper and then stuck her hand in it. Maya had a little poop today too, but she was nice and precise about it. Right now Maya is having trouble digesting milk so she is not getting fed. She still has some residual in her stomach from her feeding on Thursday night so they do not want to keep adding more on top. We have both been sucking on our practice binkies so we are ready for mom when we are strong enough to feed.
Mom and Dad got to hold Lincoln today!!! It was amazing! Mom got to do "Kangaroo Time" which means I got to hold her skin to skin for over an hour!!! Dad read "One Fish, Two Fish" to us while we cuddled. Dad got to hold her really quick too. (You are really only supposed to have one hold a day at this point, but our nurses are the best and let him sneak one in before she had to go back in her isolette.) She is so tiny. You can really tell by how little she looks in Dad's arms. Dad also got to give her a little smooch.
Our visitors today: Papi and Grandpa Dean, Uncle Jake, Uncle Ted, Chicky, and Mama Joy. Uncle Ted read us a book.
Thank you Grandma Peggy!! She made us some snugglers that Mom and Dad wear on their body, and then put in the isolette so the girls have thier scent. They are so cute a soft!!!
Can't believe that tomorrow we are a week old. For mom and dad these days have all been smooshed together. Time goes by way too fast.
Napoleon and Tuna came home today. We missed them too much. Thank you Chicky, Reg, and Jake for taking care of them!
Looking forward to a good weekend.
Both girls are now getting little bits of momma's milk! Maya is doing really well on her CPAP and we are hoping to switch to a nasal cannula in the morning. We had a little spike in our billirubin, so had to go under the light and put our sunglasses back on. We were both very active this morning. Lincoln was on her belly and kept pushing up so strongly with her arms and legs it looked like she was about to get right up. By the afternoon our nurses had us so snug we were both snoozing away.
We had lots of visitors today: Henedine, Uncle Jake, Michelle and Liz, Papi David and Angie, Grandpa Reg, and of course, Grandma Chicky. We are also lucky enough to have our friends Kerri and Lisa, who both work at Children's, come check on us. Thanks to all of you for all your support!!! Papi, thank you so much for the dinner, and especially the banana pudding - my favorite!!! You're the best!
We feel so lucky to be here at Children's Mercy! All of our nurses and physicians are so great. They are taking such good care of us, and mommy and daddy too.
THE BIG MOMENT OF THE DAY: Mommy got to change Lincoln's diaper today!!!! I know it is such a small thing, but I almost lost it.
I thought I knew what they were talking about. I have kids, I love very much, how could it be any different. Well I can't explain, but there is a new kind of love in my heart that these two beautiful girls have brought into our lives.

Savannah has asked me to help her in keeping everyone updated, as somedays she just won't have the time. So today I am just trying out my first post. I will be adding some new pictures later. As Savannah admitted, this is her first attempt at Social Networking, I too am a first time Blogger, so bear with me.

I wish each of you could see Adam and Savannah and the light in thier eyes as they beam with pride over thier two girls.

As each of you follow, I encourage you to leave The Maxwell family any messages. They have a long road a head of them before they can bring thier precious girls home and most of thier life for the next 12 weeks will consist of being with the girls at Childrens Mercy Hospital and trying to get some rest at home, and at some point work. Please continue to keep them all in your daily prayers.

Love Gramma Chicky (aka Robin)Gramma Chickyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05332162618006399687noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4943833607635311437.post-48644534627411956512011-01-06T02:31:00.000-08:002011-01-06T02:35:54.074-08:001/5/2011- Improvements around every corner! The girls are doing so well! They are making so many improvements it is almost to many to remember them all.
MAYA- Got her echo back and the medicine worked! Since her heart was good the dr. also decided that she could go off her ventilator. She was extubated and put on CPAP and is taking her own breaths now! She also got to get her umbilical line out.
LINCOLN- Got a new central PICC line today and started feeding!!! Still on a feeding tube, and will be until she is strong enough to breath and swallow at the same time, but she is getting real food!!! They gave her the first few CCs of milk I had pumped at the hospital and it was so exciting!!! Adam thinks that once they get that milk in them they will just jump right up and walk out :)
They were both looking so good today and both got to go off the bili-lights so no more giant sunglasses! It was so neat to be able to see their faces! They were both opening their eyes and looking around.
Grandma Peggy and Mim (Kim) came to visit today.
So did Dr.s Gibson and Sullivan. Thank you so much for the snacks and water! You all know me too well!

What a good day! Keep up the good work girls!

12/28/2010 - Just your typical Tuesday.....

Back to work after the holiday and had a pretty busy day as usual. After a lunch meeting I was feeling a lot of contractions. I had been having them since Thanksgiving and the doctor had said they were completely normal. Just wanting to be careful, I called up to their office. They had me go to Labor and Delivery just to get checked out. When we arrived, I was contracting every 2-3 minutes, but was not dilating at all. It was quite a long evening there at the hospital, but after a 3rd round of meds to stop the contractions, they were wiped out. Poor Adam had to watch the Tigers defeat at the hospital.

12/31/2010 - Happy New Year!

Adam and I were, and still are, slowly but surely getting things moved into the new house. We spent the day cleaning up our old house, and then came home to relax. Our midnight celebration was the mounting of the TV.. yay :)

1/1/2011 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

This ended up being the scariest and most amazing day of our lives. We slept in and had plans for a relaxing day of family and FOOD and Aunt Sherrie's for Goldsbury Christmas. I was having some cramping, but nothing too bad, so I went about my business as usual. Took a shower, got ready, put some laundry away. A little after 1 the cramps were getting pretty painful so we called up and were told again to head to Labor and Delivery. For the most part we were under the impression that we would go get the shots again to stop the contractions and be on our way to Aunt Sherrie's.

That was all soon out the window. By the time we got there I was completely thinned out, about 5 cm dilated, and my water was about to break. From there on out everything happened so fast. I have never been so scared and bewildered in my life. I knew it was way too early and could not understand how this could be happening.

After an update from the nurses, Dr. Meyers (who just so happens to be the physician who delivered me and all of my siblings) decided it would be best to head straight to the OR. This was the moment that I realized that they were really coming. Lincoln and Maya Maxwell were born on New Years Day 2011 at only 28 weeks. It all happened so quickly, and by 3:55p we heard our first little girl crying!

Lincoln Elizabeth was born at 3:55p. She weighed 3lbs and 2oz, and was 15 in long. She was crying immediately. Dad gave me a play by play as they were fixing her up and within a minute we could hear the cry's of Maya Jo! She was born at 3:56p, weighed 2lbs and 13oz, and was 14.75 in long.

We barely got a peek at them before they were transported directly to Children's Mercy. I did get to see that although they were tiny, they looked good. The first thing we noticed was that Lincoln has dark hair like her dad while Maya was all blond just like me :)

Lincoln is doing a little better than Maya. Lincoln go to be extubated within 24 hours and is breathing now with only a nasal cannula (Oxygen in her nose). Maya is not quite ready to breath on her own yet. She also has PDA, which means there is a vessel in her heart that did close up like it normally would have if she was full term. She is receiving rounds of medication and we should get the results of the follow-up echo back very soon. Despite their being so premature and tiny, they are really doing well. They are strong and stable. We know it is a long road ahead, but are trying to stay positive and hopeful!
